How do cults form... what are the building blocks for a cult?
by AK - Jeff ina friend of mine and i are in discussion on how a cult develops.
how is the foundation laid for such?
do the founders know they are setting up something that is intent on controlling others?

Mostly it is no different to any business, if there is a niche market, a "need" that no one else fulfills or at least does not fulfill in expected manner then soon enough someone will come along to take advantage of it. Like many businesses cults can also start as somebody's passion, a hobby they entertained only privately but as they started talking they found out there are willing souls ready to follow suit. Soon enough a critical mass is created and you have self-propelled cohesive unit that identifies with newly established world view.

How much does a housewife cost?
by LtCmd.Lore indon't take this the wrong way, this is purely out of curiousity.. .
assuming you are the working man who makes the money, and the wife stays at home and takes care of the house and cooks and does laundry and all that stuff.. no children!.
how much would it cost to hire someone(s) to do all those things instead?

No this is a nonsense. I was thinking of joining to Freemasons for some time but experience with witnesses well and truly did it for me as far as any organization that isn't local ski club is concerned. If you want I can recommend a number of really good academic works and books on the subject and you'll see there is no conspiracy. In fact, what most people don't even realize is that, at least here in Europe Freemasons went "underground" because of Hitler who slaughter some 80.000 of them in concentration camps. Before that they were way way more open.
The funny thing is every society that ever existed alway needed a scapegoat to take the blame for societal ills and in modern times Freemasons seems like perfect targets. It is always so, when people see somebody a bit reserved who shies away from spotlight the first thing they'll think is that there's something sinister about such ones while in reality mostly those people just value their privacy, nothing else.
And for your information I've researched that subject to death, Russell was never a Freemason, I wish he was then at least I'd have something to be proud of while I was a witness but nope he was never one of them.

I couldn't care less about porn but what bothers me is inability of some people to take their responsibilities seriously instead of passing the bucket onto someone else, be it state, social services, school, church or whatever else under the heavens. Heavens, if they can't protect their own children from such things while they are at home, inside the house, under their roof then they shouldn't be allowed to have kids at all. To today's parents everything else seems more important, career, car, holidays and kids are of only secondary consideration and even that is a stretch. No wonder they end up in strange places be it on the net or on the street. So whose fault is that? You can't endlessly blame somebody else, parents have to suck it up and start really being parents for real and not only on the birth certificate.

As I approach my 40's ...
by Ancient One inonce i passed 35 and as i approach my 40s i find that i'm really starting to enjoy myself and being true to myself, way more than teenagers even though they would like everybody to think otherwise.
for example, one of the first things to go into oblivion was being concerned what people think about me.
it is really easy to shake off unhealthy relationships with people as if they never were instead of toiling and desperately trying to make them work (i'm not talking only about intimate relationships but any).

Once I passed 35 and as I approach my 40s I find that I'm really starting to enjoy myself and being true to myself, way more than teenagers even though they would like everybody to think otherwise.
For example, one of the first things to go into oblivion was being concerned what people think about me. It is really easy to shake off unhealthy relationships with people as if they never were instead of toiling and desperately trying to make them work (I'm not talking only about intimate relationships but any). When I was a teen that would not be given even a second thought because the only measure of your worth is what your 'friends' think of you, right?I don't care if my friends share my taste in music, what kind of literature I read or what they think about things I spend money on. I find it fascinating now that all teens want to almost be lookalikes, think the same, act the same, go to the same parties, so on and so forth. They would surely make perfect model citizens in the Orwellian world. No wonder so many sects and organizations target youths. Because if they can make them believe in some sick worldview, the game is on. Masters have got perfect pawns who surrendered hearts and minds
I know, I know teens reading this will say 'what a bullshit' forgetting, of course to explain what drives them to choose certain music, clothes, shoes, language they use and ultimately think. How come so much of that is the same right across the board for you and your friends? It really can't be that all of you have the same genes and/or likes and dislikes.I mean, hell, I would find it really weird if every friend I've got would be reading history books listening to Luciano Pavarotti and spent his/her time visiting museums and archaeological dig sites. Ok, maybe one or two close associates but all of them??!! No way, how weird would that be?!
I find it absolutely, pleasurable to have a frined who is a linguist, another who is boat-builder, another who is a policeman, another who is a judge, another who is a gym instructor etc. Apart from the linguist friend not one listens to Pavarotti and absolutely none of them shares my fascination with history, but who cares. So yes, I think it may well have something to do with us growing older. These are just some examples but I'm sure rest of you could fill many more, which I'd really love to hear about.

The Ten Plagues of Egypt
by LtCmd.Lore inedited to remove my book of bs quote.
here are the ten plagues:.
1: water turned to blood.

I was interested in this subject for quite some time, there are some interesting physical evidences though I doubt as do most scholars they were related to Biblical plagues, but hey, possibly aliens :D just kidding.
This is from wikipedia.
There is archaeological material that archaeologists, such as William F. Albright, have considered historical evidence of the Ten Plagues; for example, an ancient water-trough found in El Arish bears hieroglyphic markings detailing a period of darkness.
The Egyptian Ipuwer papyrus describes a series of calamities befalling Egypt, including a river turned to blood, men behaving as wild ibises, and the land generally turned upside down. However, this is usually thought to describe a general and long term ecological disaster lasting for a period of decades, such as that which destroyed the Old Kingdom. The document is usually dated to the end of the Middle Kingdom, or more rarely, to its beginning, fitting the Old Kingdom destruction, possibly the same time as the Exodus.
Immanuel Velikovsky decided that the Egyptian papyrus did, in fact, describe the events of Exodus, along with the major natural catastrophes that he thought preceded it; in his opinion, backed up by many scholars, it was the conventional chronologies of Egypt that were wrong by several hundred years.[1]

Inner Peace
by JH indo you feel more inner peace now or when you were serving as a jw?.
no matter if the teachings were wrong, or not exact, i had more inner peace when i was "in".. i remember when i got operated for a hernia, and had to be put asleep, while i was a jw in good standings.
i knew that god would resurrect me if ever something went wrong, and i didn't wake up from the operation.. today if i had to undergo an other similar operation, i'm not sure i'd have the same inner peace.. i think that no matter what religion you practise, no matter if it's false or not as false, you develop this inner peace, that may only be an illusion..

While in at times I felt almost "drug-induced" kind of peace that was conditional of many factors e.g. if I perceived myself in line with many constraints put by The Society. It, whatever it was, was easily shaken as soon as my "focus" slipped away.
Today I just feel peace, a calm presence of mind that is not conditional on anything happening on the outside. Just calm of being one with the nature and universe around me. If that makes any sense at all, I'm sorry English is not my first language.

So, you're in love with someone that you're not compatible with ....
by Frequent_Fader_Miles inperhaps it was "love at first sight", but then you get to know him/her more intimately and realize your goals and amitions couldn't be further apart.
not that he/she isn't a good person ... just not right for you.
the physical attraction is real, but issues that are important to you pale into insignificance in his/her mind.

People who want to change somebody are never happy, they skip from one relationship to another and finally end up alone or feeling 'alone' in a relationship they've got.
The better way is to respect each other's space and give as much allowance as it is practical, each person should really work on themselves not on someone else. The key here is not how to change things but how to make things work with what you've got if you can't make it then move on.
